A People Driven Story
1928: The Beginning
The journey began in 1928 when the Detroit Federal Employees Credit Union (DFECU) was founded to serve federal employees in the Detroit area and their families. Built on principles of mutual support and financial empowerment, this member-owned, full-service financial institution laid the foundation for what would become People Driven Credit Union.
1958: MPG Credit Union is Born
Three decades later, in 1958, a group of Ford Proving Ground employees came together to form MPG Credit Union (MPGCU). Their goal was clear: to provide accessible financial services to fellow employees and their families..
2001: Community Expansion
By 2001, MPGCU took a major step forward by expanding to a community charter. The credit union opened a new branch in Romeo at 33 Mile and Van Dyke. Along with this growth, it rebranded as MPG Community Credit Union (MPGCCU), while continuing to operate its original Proving Grounds branch.
2003: Broadening Horizons
In 2003, the Detroit Federal Employees Credit Union broadened its charter to include government and public school district employees across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties—as well as their family members. This expansion marked an important milestone in the credit union’s mission to reach more members.
2005: Embracing Community
Just two years later, Detroit Federal Employees Credit Union changed its name to Peoples Trust Credit Union (PTCU) and further expanded eligibility. Now, anyone who lived, worked, or worshiped in Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb counties could become a member.
2008: A New Era
In 2008, Peoples Trust Credit Union merged with Automotive Federal Credit Union (AFCU). This strategic union prompted a new identity: Community Driven Credit Union (CDCU), symbolizing a deeper commitment to the communities it served.
2014: Becoming People Driven Credit Union
In 2014, MPG Community Credit Union merged with Community Driven Credit Union. We changed our name to People Driven Credit Union as part of this merger. At the same time, membership eligibility expanded again to include residents and workers in Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties.
2018: A Move to Downtown Romeo
In an effort to better serve the local community, the Romeo branch moved from 33 Mile Rd to the heart of downtown Romeo in 2018. This relocation improved access and visibility for local members.
2023: A People Driven Story gets Statewide Service
In 2023, People Driven Credit Union merged with Community Alliance Credit Union (CACU) enabled membership expansion across the entire state of Michigan. Now, anyone who lives, works, or prays in Michigan is eligible to join. As a result, PDCU proudly serves over 26,000 members all owners of the credit union. As a non-profit cooperative, we remain focused on delivering low-cost financial solutions to empower our community.
2024: A message from Renee DeMarco, President/CEO Of PDCU.
At our 96th Annual Meeting in Southfield, Michigan, on March 27, 2024, President and CEO Renee DeMarco reflected on this remarkable journey. Her message underscored our enduring commitment to our members, our values, and the future we are building together driven by people, for people.
2028: Our People Driven story will celebrate our 100th year helping the families of Michigan.
We’re looking forward to our 100th anniversary in 2028, continuing to grow, innovate, and serve members across Michigan.

No — our statewide membership is a recent development. In 2023, People Driven Credit Union merged with Community Alliance Credit Union, which expanded our charter to serve anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school anywhere in Michigan.
Before this merger, membership eligibility was limited to specific counties and select employee groups. Over the years, we’ve expanded through mergers and charter changes — starting with serving federal employees in Detroit in 1928, then gradually opening to more communities in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, and eventually other areas.
Today, with more than 26,000 members across the state, our statewide reach allows us to deliver the same people-first service to members no matter where they call home in Michigan.
Is People Driven Credit Union the same as “Peoples Community Credit Union”?
No — our official name is People Driven Credit Union (PDCU). We know some folks say “Peoples Community Credit Union,” but that has never been our legal name. We’ll still respond if someone uses it, because the mix-up comes from our merger history.
Quick history:
- Peoples Trust Credit Union merged with Automotive Federal Credit Union to form Community Driven Credit Union.
- In 2014, MPG Community Credit Union merged with Community Driven Credit Union.
- As part of that 2014 merger, we adopted the name People Driven Credit Union.
If you see “Peoples Community Credit Union” out in the wild, it’s likely referring to us — but the correct name is People Driven Credit Union (PDCU).
