National Picnic Month: How to Enjoy Summer Without Breaking the Bank

Group of friends having a picnic.

July is National Picnic Month and there’s no better excuse to grab a blanket, pack a cooler, and enjoy Michigan’s beautiful summer outdoors. Even better? Picnics are one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to enjoy time with friends and family without blowing your budget.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic sunset dinner in the park or a backyard bash with the kids, here are some budget-friendly tips to help you celebrate summer the smart way.

1. Keep the Menu Simple (and Delicious)

You don’t need gourmet charcuterie boards or a fancy grill setup. Classic sandwiches, pasta salad, fresh fruit, and homemade lemonade go a long way. Want to save even more? Plan your picnic menu around what’s already in your pantry or what’s on sale at your local grocery store.

2. Shop Smart with a Rewards Card

If you’re stocking up on snacks and supplies, don’t miss out on the opportunity to earn while you spend. Use your PDCU Rewards Driven Credit Card to earn cashback or points on every purchase from grocery runs to park permits.

3. Choose Free (or Nearly Free) Locations

Michigan is filled with incredible parks, lakeshores, and trails. Many city and county parks offer free admission or low-cost day passes. Pack up the family and explore somewhere new without draining your wallet. Don’t forget to bring your games or a Frisbee!

4. Go Potluck-Style

Invite a few friends and have everyone bring a dish to share. Not only does it reduce your cost, but it also makes the picnic more fun and social. Plus, you get to sample a variety of treats without doing all the work.

5. Make It a “No-Spend” Day

Challenge yourself to plan a day out without spending a dime. Use what you already have at home, head to a park with free entry, and leave the credit cards in your wallet. Sometimes the best memories are made when we focus on the moment, not the money.

6. Plan and Set a Budget

Even low-cost activities can add up if you’re not careful. Take a few minutes to plan, set a spending limit, and stick to it. Want help managing your budget overall? Watch our recorded Monthly Spending Plan webinar to get started.
