Renters insurance options for PDCU members

Renters insurance helps protect the belongings you keep in a rented apartment, house, or other living space. It may also provide liability protection if you are responsible for certain injuries or property damage.

Through the TruStage® Auto & Home Insurance Program, People Driven Credit Union members can explore renters insurance made available through TruStage and Liberty Mutual. You can request a quote, review available coverage, and decide whether the policy fits your needs.

Your landlord’s insurance generally covers the building, not your furniture, clothing, electronics, and other personal belongings. Your coverage, pricing, discounts, deductible, limits, and exclusions will depend on the policy and your individual circumstances.

What does renters insurance cover?

Renters insurance can help with certain costs when your belongings are stolen or damaged by a covered event. Depending on the policy, it may also provide liability protection and help with temporary living expenses.

Personal belongings

Personal property coverage may help repair or replace belongings such as furniture, clothing, smartphones, computers, televisions, bicycles, and household items after a covered loss.

Personal liability

Liability coverage may help with certain expenses if you are found legally responsible for injuring another person or damaging their property. Coverage limits and exclusions apply.

Temporary living expenses

If a covered event makes your rental temporarily uninhabitable, your policy may help with certain additional living expenses, such as a hotel or short-term rental.

Covered events

Renters insurance may cover losses caused by events such as theft, fire, smoke, vandalism, and certain types of water damage. The events covered will depend on your policy.

Review the policy carefully to understand its coverage limits, deductible, exclusions, and requirements. A deductible is the amount you may need to pay before your insurance coverage applies to an eligible claim.

Does your landlord’s insurance cover your belongings?

Your landlord’s insurance generally covers the rental building, not the personal belongings inside your apartment or rented house. If your furniture, clothing, computer, bicycle, or other possessions are stolen or damaged during a covered event, your landlord’s policy may not pay to repair or replace them.

A renters insurance policy may help cover eligible personal belongings, subject to the policy’s deductible, coverage limits, exclusions, and covered events.

Review your lease requirements

Some landlords and property managers require tenants to carry renters insurance. Your lease may specify a minimum amount of liability coverage or require you to provide proof of insurance. Review your lease before selecting a policy so you understand the coverage you may need.

Who should consider renters insurance?

Renters insurance may be useful if you rent your primary living space and want coverage for eligible belongings, personal liability, and certain additional living expenses.

  • People renting an apartment, house, townhouse, or other residence
  • Renters whose landlord or property manager requires insurance
  • People moving into their first apartment
  • College students renting off-campus housing
  • Renters with furniture, electronics, clothing, bicycles, or other personal belongings
  • People reviewing or comparing their current renters insurance coverage
  • Renters interested in asking about potential auto and renters insurance savings

Your coverage needs will depend on the value of your belongings, your lease requirements, your preferred deductible, and the amount of financial protection you want.

How much renters insurance coverage do you need?

Start by estimating how much it would cost to replace your belongings after a major covered loss. A home inventory can help you choose a personal property coverage limit and document what you own if you need to file a claim.

Create a home inventory

Go room by room and record your belongings. Include estimated replacement costs, serial numbers, receipts, and photos when available.

  • Furniture and home décor
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Computers, televisions, phones, and other electronics
  • Kitchen appliances, cookware, and dishes
  • Bicycles, tools, and sporting equipment
  • Jewelry, collectibles, and other valuable items
  • Books and everyday household items

Small purchases add up quickly, so include everyday belongings along with expensive items. Certain valuables may have lower coverage limits or require additional coverage. Ask the insurance provider how the policy treats jewelry, collectibles, specialized equipment, and other high-value belongings.

Compare replacement cost and actual cash value

Replacement cost coverage generally considers what it would cost to replace an eligible item with a similar new item. Actual cash value generally considers the item’s age, condition, and depreciation. Review the available options carefully because the way a policy values belongings can affect both your coverage and your quote.

What can affect your renters insurance quote?

Renters insurance pricing depends on the rental property, the coverage you select, and other individual factors. Your quote may be affected by:

  • The rental property’s address and type
  • Your selected personal property and liability coverage limits
  • Your deductible
  • Your claims history
  • The number of people included on the policy
  • Safety and security features at the rental property
  • Pets in the household
  • Optional coverage selections
  • Available discounts
  • Whether you combine qualifying renters and auto insurance policies

Coverage options, pricing, eligibility, and discounts vary. Review the complete quote and policy details before choosing coverage.

What do you need for a renters insurance quote?

Having a few details ready can make the quote process easier:

  • Your rental property’s address and property type
  • Your move-in date
  • Names of the people who need to be included on the policy
  • An estimate of the cost to replace your personal belongings
  • Information about pets in the household
  • Your landlord’s insurance requirements, if applicable
  • Your preferred coverage limits and deductible
  • Details about jewelry, collectibles, or other high-value belongings
  • Your current renters insurance policy, if you already have coverage
  • Your auto insurance information if you want to ask about combining policies

The insurance provider may request additional information based on the rental property, your coverage selections, and its underwriting requirements.

People Driven Credit Union members can explore renters insurance through the TruStage® Auto & Home Insurance Program. TruStage works with Liberty Mutual to make renters insurance available to credit union members.

Renters insurance may cover eligible personal belongings damaged or stolen during a covered event. Depending on the policy, it may also provide personal liability coverage and help with certain additional living expenses if your rental becomes temporarily uninhabitable.

Your landlord’s insurance generally covers the rental building, not your personal belongings. A renters insurance policy may help repair or replace eligible belongings after a covered loss, subject to the policy’s deductible, limits, and exclusions.

Consider how much it would cost to replace your furniture, clothing, electronics, and other belongings. A home inventory can help you estimate their value and select an appropriate personal property coverage limit. You should also review any liability coverage requirements in your lease.

A deductible is the amount you may need to pay before insurance coverage applies to an eligible claim. Available deductibles and how they apply will depend on the policy.

A renters insurance policy may not automatically cover an unrelated roommate or their belongings. Each roommate should ask the insurance provider whether they need a separate policy or must be specifically included on the coverage.

A standard policy may limit coverage for certain high-value belongings. Tell the insurance provider about jewelry, collectibles, specialized equipment, and expensive electronics so you can review whether additional coverage is available or needed.

Depending on the policy, renters insurance may help with certain additional living expenses if a covered event makes your rental temporarily uninhabitable. Coverage limits, eligible expenses, and documentation requirements apply.

You may be able to combine qualifying renters and auto insurance policies. Ask the insurance provider about available multi-policy options and whether they could affect your coverage or pricing.
