Prize-Linked Savings Program for Michigan Credit Unions

Save-to-Win is a national award-winning savings program available exclusively through credit unions. It was designed to help people build real savings habits by making the process rewarding in a tangible way. Instead of watching a savings balance grow slowly with little motivation to keep going, Save-to-Win gives members something to look forward to every quarter.

A provision in the Michigan Credit Union Act allows state and federal-chartered credit unions to offer prize-linked savings raffles to their members. Under this provision, a qualifying savings deposit earns entries into a drawing. It is not gambling. Your money stays in your account, earns interest, and you simply have a chance to win on top of that. The $1,000 quarterly prize is currently awarded every four months and is subject to change. National prizes are awarded separately through the broader Save-to-Win program.

The results speak for themselves. More than 13,000 Michigan credit union members have collectively saved $22 million through Save-to-Win. That is $22 million that stayed in Michigan households rather than going toward high-interest debt or being spent impulsively. For families who struggle to find a reason to set money aside consistently, Save-to-Win removes the friction. A $25 deposit gets you started. Every additional $25 earns another entry. The Roundup-to-Win feature makes it even easier by automatically rounding up your debit purchases to the nearest dollar and routing the difference into your Save-to-Win CD until you hit the next $25 threshold.

This program started as part of Michigan’s Community Reinvestment Initiative, rooted in the credit union philosophy of People Helping People. The idea is straightforward.
