Memorial Day: Our Reflections

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice reminds us of the actual cost of freedom, and we are deeply grateful.

Honoring Memorial Day

To observe the holiday, People Driven Credit Union will be closed on Saturday and Monday. We will reopen with regular business hours on Tuesday. Although our branches will be closed, you can still access your accounts anytime through Online Banking at my.peopledrivencu.org or the MyPDCU mobile app.

The Meaning Behind Memorial Day

Memorial Day isn’t just the unofficial start of summer. It’s a day set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. Their sacrifice protects the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday began after the Civil War as a way to honor Union soldiers who had fallen in battle. By the late 1800s, communities across the country were holding ceremonies to decorate graves and gather in remembrance. In 1971, Congress officially declared Memorial Day a federal holiday, observed on the last Monday of May each year.

Today, Memorial Day is marked in many ways. Some families visit cemeteries and place flowers or flags on the graves of fallen service members. Others attend parades or local ceremonies. Many simply take a quiet moment during the day to reflect on what the holiday represents. The National Moment of Remembrance, observed at 3:00 p.m. local time, invites all Americans to pause for one minute in honor of those who gave everything.

Here in Michigan, there are meaningful ways to observe the day close to home. The Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly is one of the most visited veteran memorials in the state, and many Southeast Michigan communities hold their own Memorial Day events each year.

Honoring Those Who Served in Our Community

At People Driven Credit Union, we have always had deep roots in the communities we serve across Southeast Michigan. Many of our members have served in the military, and many more have family members who have. We do not take lightly the freedom that makes it possible for us to do what we do every day.

This weekend, we encourage you to take a moment beyond the backyard cookouts and the start of summer. Think about a veteran you know. Reach out to a Gold Star family in your community. Attend a local ceremony if you can. These small acts of acknowledgment carry real weight.

We also recognize the families of fallen service members who carry their legacy forward every day. The grief does not end when the ceremonies do, and the strength it takes to honor a loved one’s memory while continuing to live your own life is something worth acknowledging.

To every veteran, active service member, and military family connected to the PDCU community: thank you. Your service and your sacrifice mean more than words can fully express.

Thank You to Our Heroes

We thank all who have served and sacrificed. We recognize the families who carry their legacy forward. Your strength and dedication inspire us. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.
