Columbus Day Closure: Use the Day to Explore and Learn

Please note that all People Driven Credit Union branches will be closed on Saturday, October 10, 2026, and Monday, October 12, 2026, in observance of Columbus Day.

Old sails on a tall ship.

Every year, on the second Monday of October, many Americans enjoy a long weekend thanks to the Columbus Day holiday. You may have noticed that most banks and credit unions, including People Driven Credit Union (PDCU), close their doors on this day. But have you ever wondered why?

The History of Columbus Day

Statue of Christopher Columbus.
Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Established as a national holiday in the United States in 1937, it’s a day set aside to recognize Columbus’s role in the history of exploration, though it has become a point of reflection and debate in recent years.

While Columbus Day is a federal holiday, it’s not universally observed. Columbus Day remains a recognized federal holiday, which means all federal institutions, including banks and credit unions, close for the day.

Why Financial Institutions Close on Federal Holidays

Credit unions and banks observe federal holidays, such as Columbus Day, as part of their tradition of aligning with national observances. When the federal government is closed, financial institutions follow suit, allowing employees to take time off. This closure is not only a standard business practice but also a way for financial institutions to give their teams a well-deserved break.

How This Impacts You

While PDCU’s branches will be closed on Monday, rest assured that your banking doesn’t have to pause. With our online and mobile banking services, you can still manage your accounts, transfer funds, and deposit checks through the MyPDCU app or at my.peopledrivencu.org. So even though our physical locations will be closed, your financial needs can still be met conveniently from wherever you are.

Plan Ahead

With Columbus Day approaching, it’s a good idea to plan your in-person banking needs ahead of time. If you need to visit a branch, consider stopping by before the holiday weekend. Our team will be ready to assist you with any of your financial needs.

ATMs and Mobile App

While People Driven Credit Union branches will be closed in observance of Columbus Day, you can still manage your finances. Our ITMs, ATMs, mobile app, and online banking services are available 24/7 for your convenience. Access your accounts, make transfers, deposit checks, and more from the comfort of your home or on the go. Enjoy your day, and remember that PDCU is always just a click or tap away.
