Bank vs. Credit Union: What Is the Difference?

When comparing a bank vs. credit union, the biggest difference is ownership. Banks serve customers and may be owned by private investors or shareholders. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members.

Both can offer checking accounts, savings accounts, loans, credit cards, digital banking, and other financial services. The right choice depends on the products, rates, service, access, and tools that matter to you.

Member ownership changes the relationship

Opening the required membership share makes you a member-owner of a credit union. Members can vote in eligible credit union elections and help choose the volunteer board of directors.

At People Driven Credit Union, every new member opens a Membership Share Savings Account and maintains the required ownership share. This establishes membership and provides access to eligible PDCU products and services.

Compare real rates and terms

A credit union does not automatically offer the strongest rate on every product. A bank does not automatically offer the weakest. Compare the current annual percentage yield, or APY, on deposit accounts and the annual percentage rate, or APR, on loans.

Also compare loan terms, account requirements, digital tools, branch access, and service. The logo on the building matters less than the actual offer.

Check access and technology

Some people assume a credit union limits them to a small local branch network. That is not always the case. PDCU members can use online and mobile banking, PDCU locations, and participating shared branch and ATM networks.

Before switching financial institutions, check whether the mobile app supports the tasks you use most, whether convenient locations are available, and how you can reach someone when you need help.

Are bank and credit union accounts federally insured?

Eligible deposits at FDIC-insured banks and eligible share deposits at federally insured credit unions receive federal insurance within applicable limits and ownership categories. People Driven Credit Union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration.
